- Much of The Alchemist seems to be about learning. How does the book argue that wisdom is gained? Another question might be: What is wisdom?
- Does economic class play a role in realizing your Personal Legend? Why or why not?
- Let's think of an alternate end to The Alchemist: Santiago earns a lot of money in Tangier, goes back to Spain, buys a lot of sheep, marries the merchant's daughter and has a family. Is this a happy ending or a sad one?
- The Englishman is attempting to realize his Personal Legend too. In what ways is his philosophy toward life different than Santiago's? In what ways similar?
- What role does Fatima play in Santiago's Personal Legend?
Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 102 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.

Some questions I have about The Alchemist:

-I can see in the book that wisdom is gained through experience, wisdom is the body of knowledge and principles that develops within a specified society or period.
ReplyDelete- I feel like economic class does not play a role in my personal legend because I'm surrounded by all different kinds of people, coming together for the same interest.
- I feel like it could be both, happy because he has his sheep, and marries the girl that he loves, but sad because he never reached his goal.
-
- Fatima supports Santiago, and he is in love with her and she plays a big role in his life.
1-In the book, wisdom is gained through experience. Santiago goes through many trials and tribulations, but for each situation he experiences, he learns something new everytime.
ReplyDeleteIt does not because we are born with equal opportunity. It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, it is up to you to get to where you have to go.
It's neither happy or sad, however it is not the ideal ending i would have imagined for Santiago. From the start of the book it is evident that he is a go-getter and wants to pursue his dreams. He isn't the type of character that would settle for the least. especially after he's gone through so much, I doubt he would give it all up just to stay stuck in one place. He's itinerant by nature.
The Englishman's ways are different because he lives life day by day and doesn't observe his surrounding as much as Santiago. He believes everything he needs to know and learn about life are in a book.
Fatima's role in Santiago's personal legend is motivation. She wants a man that isn't tied down and learns things from traveling the world. This motivates him to want to accomplish his goals, and return to the love of his life.
- someone who has wisdom has experienced a lot which led then to know whats right vs whats wrong. which is how learning can lead to wisdom.
ReplyDelete-i believe that if someone has is more financially stable they are more likely to take risk because they have the money to to so. If a person is not financially stable it would be harder for them to take risk because they don't have much.
-If the ending of the book was that he married the merchants daughter and had a family instead of finding the treasure wouldn't be a sad ending. Maybe he could have realized that she was the treasure he wanted to get. Maybe that what he want his personal legend to be. To continue his family legacy.

1.It seems like wisdom is born with a person. But what a person has that born with him/her can not always define that person. Because in every part or even every second of life we are still keeping learning, we are improving our self all the time. No one is stupid if you hard work and be able to learn. In this book, we can see the character speak Spanish only,if he want to go to African he definitely need to learn another language to communicating. And that's the way he use to do and get himself through to achieve his dream. That's all about learning and being educating.
ReplyDelete2.well, to me economic class doesn't play a role in realizing my personal legend. It might be one part of my personal legend but it's hard for me find out something that it's important for me right now. Because I feel like it's not be a big deal comparing to other experience I have.
3.It's looks like it's a happy ending of the story because everything is all set, the boy just get everything what he wants. as long as he was challenging and was overcoming problems to get those stuffs, that would be more meaningful.
4.They are different because Santiago already had a goal which was to earn money and go back to Spain to buy sheep. The Englishman was kind of lost because he even didn't what his dream was in the beginning. They are in some way are the same because they are both found their goals but they a were sure if they are going to accept them and follow steps to achieve them or just feel comfortable with current situation
5. Fatima is the person who gives encourage and support to Santiago, and that helps a lot to Santiago to build his life more beautifully by complete his goals.
